After initial difficulties John Waite finally manages it to convince Don Grierson of Epic and begins to look for suitable musicians. His idea takes shape in the form of Jonathan Cain (2nd from right), John´s former bandmate, who had replaced Gregg Rolie in the legendary US band Journey after the break of THE BABYS in 1981.
In fact that both of them are coached by the same manager, Trudy Greene, a meeting is going to be arranged. Jonathan, at that time on tour with Michael Bolton, seems to look for a musical change as well. „He was quite down when we met“, later on John says. „It didn´t work out that good with Journey.“ John tells him about his plans and they meet for some rehearsals. FULL CIRCLE as a band name is taken into consideration but, however, quickly rejected. John and Jonathan think that the symbolic meaning of that name could be misconstrued and bring a wrong link to
THE BABYS. The name BAD ENGLISH happens rather by chance from the law of the game, pool. Jonathan Cain came up with that and BAD ENGLISH was born. The name at least. The band as such is on its best way to follow.

Jonathan contacts another Ex-BABY - no other than Ricky Phillips, (on the photo left) and Neil Schon (center), early Santana once, and finally and ultimately co-founder and by then fellow passenger in Journey yet. One is all ablaze for Neil. „I was fascinated by his skill and his ideas“, John enthuses. „He didn´t do things in half measures. You could depend on him. It came clear very soon that we wanted him and no one else.“ And Mr. Schon doesn't seem to be quite averse either. „Neil kept showing up“, John remembers. „He came around and just said 'Hello'. Sometimes he watched TV, sometimes he played a bit guitar. One day he started bringing two guitars, then he left his jacket, his cigarettes... And then he just didn´t leave.“

But it isn't that simple. Neil wants to finish his own project first. BAD ENGLISH, however, turns out to be pretty impatient and Neil suggests some major guitar players. Two and a half months later his phone rang: „We found none. Still interested?“ Looks like the die is cast already...

So meanwhile, Neil Schon has finished his project and finally joins the band. In fact that there is still a drummer missing, Neil calls the as yet largely unknown Deen Castronovo (on the photo right) from Oregon into play. Deen, former drummer of the Wild Dogs hasn´t that moving past to offer that his potential new fellows have though but he
co-operated with major wizzes like Tony MacAlpine, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker (the list can be continued as long as you like, both before and after…) and last but not least with Neil Schon on his - throughout positive rated - album Late Nite (photo below), which has been the reason for the delay.

Deen sits down at the drums („The first day I walked in, I was scared, big time!“) and that is half the battle. One requests a couple of days for respite but none of the remaining auditioning drummers is fit to hold a candle to Deen. So BAD ENGLISH is complete and…
