…THE FIRST BAD ENGLISH ALBUM…

Erstes Album 1989

…doesn´t take that much time to wait. It´s going to be released in June 1989 and climbs #21 in the US album charts. „We had approximately 40 songs“, says John. „Some of them I wouldn´t have even played for my dog.“ The rest makes the album. Several millions sold copies and the following award in platinum proves spectacularly that these guys get along very well together. John Waite is back in the spotlight.
„To be back in a band with such high caliber people is like being born again“, the warlike vocalist gushes.
„Hallelujah, I can see!“

BAD ENGLISH betakes on tour and the first single „Forget Me Not“ runs pretty well. Though it´s the second that exceeds all expectations. „When I See You Smile“ hits the US charts in November ´89 and scores #1. „That song gets me teary“, Deen Castronovo says. „I was always a big fan of those big ballads. I remember when I heard 'Missing you' and John Waite´s voice, it just killed me. I was going through a rough time in 1984 and that song hit me hard. So when I hear him sing 'When I See You Smile' it´s just incredible. This song speaks for itself. I love it both, lyrically and musically. It tells me what this band is capable of doing.“ The echo of this power ballad even reaches Europe.

It´s the second success for John in Germany, although not roughly that circuitous like some years before. Those who remember are pretty surprised about his extraordinary development. (Including me, Petra.) In the 80´s a neat looking teen idol still, are there only a handful people here in our (German) latitudes that had recognized his outstanding talent at that time. Therefore it´s a real surprise to see that five years ago oh so innocent looking lad as the front man of a rock band now. But one can hardly believe that mutation, and people tend to -- in spite of their flawless power rock -- measure BAD ENGLISH only on him and his classic pop song, although he points out again and again the ingenuity of his four band mates and emphasizes, to be only one of a five piece coequal whole. John Waite can´t get rid of this „Missing You“ image and one may argue if this might be one of many of reasons why BAD ENGLISH can´t catch on properly in Germany.

From March to June 1990 BAD ENGLISH tours the USA again and gains considerable success as opener for Whitesnake. They perform live several times in several TV shows, a video with five video clips is going to be released. In the same year they release three more songs. One of it -- „Price Of Love“ -- makes #5 in the US charts.
„Best Of What I Got”, the opener on their debut album, is taken as soundtrack for the action film Tango & Cash (photo left below) with Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.

Soundtrack "Days of Thunder"

A considerable surprise is a single-handed effort that John does for another soundtrack, Days of Thunder. (1990, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, photo right above) - „Deal For Life“. A wonderful piece of music -- almost right made for John -- on what he shines with extraordinary vocal perfectibility. The video clip, which is very hard to find meanwhile, is made during the BAD ENGLISH USA tour.
