1991 - BAD ENGLISH - BACKLASH
The second album is in work, but „Backlash“ is going to be ill-fated. The guys don´t have much material together yet when BAD ENGLISH comes to a head. John Waite remembers: „We went into the studio with hardly any songs, which was a major mistake and we were hit by the truth. We didn´t have any songs really.“ In the beginning of their short career Neil Schon said: „John tries to capture soul in what he does. He is a very convincing singer. If he doesn´t believe in a lyric he won´t sing it.“ Originally meant as a compliment it turns against John Waite now. It´s getting harder and harder to come to right. The band wants to go straight rock, while John prefers more melodic sounds. He feels more and more pressurized and he is reluctant to do that arena-rock which is to his displeasure also claimed by the record company. John, however, wants to keep his musical integrity. „It was unendurable“, John remembers. „I was working like 18 hours a day on songs and in the studio at the same time. I burnt myself out really. But I felt compelled to stay through that situation.“
However, it gets even worse. John Waite gets involved into
two serious car accidents,
Jonathan Cain and So the hit by destiny singer decides to finish „Backlash“ (August ´91) and does a bit promotion what brings him for several interviews to Germany. After that John Waite leaves BAD ENGLISH. „I walked away from a very successful thing“, he says. „I was the black sheep even though all this was shaky anyway. I took it all very personally that time, but I honored the contracts and then I left. There was no amount of money that would have persuaded me to stay. The music business don´t wanna hear about artistic integrity when the talk is about a million of dollars.“ |
